Ekaterinburg is a deservedly popular stop along the Trans-Siberian railway providing a wide range of authentic Russian experiences both inside the city and in the beautiful countryside of the Ural mountains outside of the city. There are plenty of outdoor activities both in the summer and winter with Ekaterinburg providing some of the best winter options along the whole Trans-Siberian route. If you are looking for a good stopover in addition to the popular options of Irkutsk and Mongolia then Ekaterinburg is ideal and hard to beat. Contact us with any questions you have.

EKA-01: Full Day Tour to the Beautiful 300 Year Old Koptelovo Village

Drive 145 km to the beautiful and photogenic 300 year old Koptelovo village. Here we see a traditional Siberian “izba” house – a style suited to the often extreme environment that can be seen right across Siberia. We also visit the local museum to learn about everyday life in this part of Russia and listen to a concert of local folk music. To round the day off take a horse carriage (sledge in winter) ride, the traditional way people moved around these remote villages. Return to Ekaterinburg late afternoon with a free evening.

EKA-02: Tour to Beautiful Nevyansk & Tavolgi & Stops at the 300 Year Old Villages of Kunara & Byngi

Drive 80 km out of the city to the traditional Ural town of Nevyansk, a showcase of the history and culture of the Ural region and in particular the local dynasty of the Demidovs, a well known industrialist family. We see the Nevyansk “leaning tower” and the recently restored Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral. For lunch we move on to Tavolgi village stopping at a craft centre (closed on Mondays). Here and you have a chance to make pottery, something this area is well known for in Russia. We will also visit the 300 year old villages of Kunara and Byngi to experience rural life in the Urals. Drive back to Ekaterinburg with a free evening.

EKA-03: Full Day Tour to the Superb Museum of Wooden Architecture

Drive to the old village of Nizhnyaya Sinyachikha 167 km from Ekaterinburg and famous for its excellent museum of traditional architecture showcasing full size examples of many types and styles of log built buildings. The village is also famous for its folk art and we visit the Monastery of Romanovs dedicated to members of the Tsar’s family who were executed in Alapaevsk. Return to Ekaterinburg late afternoon with a free evening.

EKA-04: Full Day Hiking Trip Into the Forests Outside of the City

Drive to the rolling Ural mountains for a day of moderate level hiking covering about 8 km through a region called “The Stone Belt.” During the walk we pass through the picturesque Nature Park “Bazhovskie Mesta” and you see Siberian taiga forest, old rocks, rivers, and ponds. Your guide will show you how to pick mushrooms & berries, skills commonplace in rural Russia allowing people in these remote regions to survive. After the hike we return to Ekaterinburg where you have a free evening to relax after the day’s exertions.
IMPORTANT ENCEPHALITIS WARNING: There is a small danger of catching the tick-borne disease Encephalitis from May till mid-July. Vaccination is strongly recommended as is making sure your arms and legs are well covered when walking in the forests.

EKA-05: Half Day Taiga Survival Skills Course in the Forest

Learn some basic but vital survival skills on this 5 hour tour that would help you if you had to spend any unexpected time in Russia’s vast Taiga forests! You learn what you can and can’t eat as your guide takes you into the beautiful forests that surround the city. This style of adventure is a very popular past time in the summer months for Siberian people.

EKA-06: Historical Day Trip to Nevyansk & Tavolgi to Pan for Gold

Drive out 90 km into the Ural Mountains to the old town of Nevyansk, long a symbol of the crucial mining and industrial history of the Urals. Visit the famous Nevyansk “leaning tower” and the recently restored Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral. Continue to Tavolgi village where you have the chance to pan for gold and gems(we can’t guarantee you find any, but you should have a lot of fun trying!). Regardless of what you find you can make your own souvenir from the panned minerals. The trip includes a local countryside style lunch. Return to Ekaterinburg where you have a free evening.

EKA-07: Full Day Traditional Ice Fishing Experience on a Frozen Lake

Drive 1 hour south of Ekaterinburg to reach an area of lakes where the ice reaches 1 meter thick and often under a lot of snow on top. Drill down through the ice and see if you can land your lunch! Ice fishing is one of the more popular winter weekend hobbies in Russia with the advantage that you get to cook and eat your lovely fresh catch! All equipment including cold weather gear is provided. Return to Ekaterinburg with a free evening to thaw!

EKA-08: 6 Hour Trip Learning to Drive a Dog Sledge Through the Winter Forest

You will be picked up at your hotel by our expert in dog sledging and driven to an area to the west of the city. Here you meet the real Siberian ‘Khaski” dogs who will be pulling your traditional sledge for 7 km through the beautiful ice encrusted winter forest. Full instruction will be given and whilst sledging there is a back up vehicle. Picnic lunch in the forest before returning to Ekaterinburg with the rest of the day free.
Available from the 15th November to 1st March excluding the period of the 31st December to 10th January.

EKA-09: Ski Where Few Other Non-Russians Have on This 7 Hour Ski Trip

Drive to either the Mt Ezhovaya area (70 km) or Mt Volchikha area (45 km) well into the middle Ural mountains where there are well regarded slopes and no shortage of snow! Note that ski passes and equipment need to be rented and paid for locally as there is a wide range of options available depending on your ability – the prices are fair and average around £ 50 per person payable in Rubles. Return to Ekaterinburg late afternoon with free time to relax or Après Ski!

EKA-10: 2 Hour Russian Banya Experience

The perfect way to relax with 2 hours in the steam bath known as a “Banya”, one of the great Russian traditions. Your guide will instruct you in the etiquette and method of using the facilities including the tradition of being beaten with birch branches!

EKA-11: 3 Hour Cross Country Skiing

Drive 15 km to the beautiful Uktuss Mountains for an active afternoon cross country skiing in the winter wonderland of the Siberian forest. All equipment is provided.
Available from the 1st December to 1st March.

EKA-12: 3 Hour Forest Walk

Drive into the countryside for a pleasant afternoon walk in the forests of the rolling Ural mountains. We pass rural villages and their traditional wooden Izba houses and gardens and will cover an undemanding 4 km in total making this walk suitable for almost everyone.
